“Well, did you get her?”

Scannell shook his head. “Naw. She ducked at the last minute and my man missed.”

Bein cursed.

“Simmer down. We’ll fix her. We fetched you her letter, didn’t we?”

“A fat lot of good that does when she spent an hour talking to King at the Bulletin.”

“He can be dealt with, too, you know.”

The stylish businessman shook his head as he brushed invisible dust off the cuff of his jacket. “Not yet. We don’t want to call too much attention to him or to his paper, especially not when the governor has sent Sherman to take over as major general of the second division of militia.”

Chuckling, the sheriff snorted. “I wouldn’t worry about Sherman. He’ll be hamstrung by General Wool and maybe Farragut, too, if he asks the Navy for help. We’re the Law and Order Party, remember?”

“Yes. And we have Governor Johnson hoodwinked. I just don’t trust everyone to continue to act in my best interests. Neither should you.”

“I don’t see why you’re so worried about one newspaperman. King doesn’t control all the press.”

“No, but he’s influential with the right people. Remember, he was a banker until he lost his own fortune in the panic of ’54. He made plenty of friends among the rich when he was one of them.”

“So? He bleeds like every other man.”

“I hope it won’t come to that,” Bein said. “Eliminating my partner was bad enough. Having poor Isabelle caught in the crossfire was inexcusable.”

“Did you have a soft spot in your heart for her?” Scannell asked.

“None of your business. Just see that I’m kept abreast of any new developments and guard the Reese property until I tell you different.”

“Yes, sir.” He smiled slyly. “What about the girl? She’s trouble and you know it. Do you want us to try for her again?”

“Not yet. Let’s give it a few days and see what else happens. I’m curious about what King’s actually planning to print and I don’t want anyone to have reason to blame me for your sloppy work.”

“Well, it’s pretty confusin’ and that’s a fact. I can’t hardly tell who’s on our side and who’s not.”

“As long as you continue to take orders from me you’ll be fine. Don’t even think of selling out to the other side or you won’t live long enough to spend whatever they pay you. Understand?”

“Yeah, yeah. You can trust me, Mr. Bein.”

He lit a cheroot and blew smoke before he smiled and said, “I don’t trust anybody but myself. Never have and never will. That was my late, lamented partner’s problem. He trusted the wrong people.” He chuckled. “And look what it got him.”
